@maharaanii7x: 📍 National Museum of the American Indian- Washington, DC 🪶 🎟️ Admission: FREE- no ticket required 🕐 Hours: 10 AM–5:30 PM daily Tbh, there wasn’t as much to see here as I expected. For generations, Native children were taken from their families and sent to government and church-run boarding schools where they were forced to assimilate. They were punished for speaking their own languages, their hair was cut, traditional clothing was taken away, and they were pushed to abandon their culture and identity. The Smithsonian says more than 357 Native boarding and day schools were established in the U.S. during the 19th and early 20th centuries. So much Indigenous history and culture was intentionally suppressed, which honestly made the museum feel a little heavier to me. But Native culture was not erased- Indigenous communities are still here, preserving and rebuilding languages, traditions and identities that people tried to take from them. The museum itself is free, right by the National Mall, and has exhibits covering Native peoples from across the Western Hemisphere. Definitely worth stopping in if you’re already exploring DC. #NationalMuseumOfTheAmericanIndian #WashingtonDC #Smithsonian #NativeAmericanHistory #IndigenousHistory

The Mashantucket Pequot tribe made the single largest donation to fund the construction of this museum (they later got 2 other tribes to match that). Their museum in Connecticut is arguably the best museum of Native American culture in the world. They have a life size wigwam village inside of it. Yes it is focused on their culture specifically, but I think a must-see.
