@alex.feedingslp: Low muscle tone can show up during feeding in ways we don’t always immediately recognize 👀 For this little friend, one of our functional goals was being able to independently suck from a pouch. Instead of only practicing the pouch itself, we worked on some of the underlying oral-motor skills needed to make that happen. One tool I incorporated? Vibration. Vibration provides additional sensory input, and in this session I used it as part of a larger treatment approach to help facilitate oral awareness and motor activation before practicing the functional feeding skill. And then came the best part… independent sucking from the pouch 🙌 This doesn’t mean vibration is the answer for every child with low tone—or that one tool created the change. Feeding is complex, and intervention should always be individualized to the child. But sometimes changing the sensory-motor input can help us access a skill we’ve been working toward.
