@fordcoleman_: Before I dive in it’s important to note that Runway is completely bootstrapped with zero investors and zero outside capital. We built this entirely ourselves and only used customer revenue to grow the business. 0 → 20K: Founder personal brand Every single one of our first 20K users came from content I was already posting. I'd spent years building an audience in the early career space. 400K+ followers across platforms. When we launched Runway, that audience became our first users. No ads. No growth team. Just distribution I'd already built. 20K → 40K: Newsletter + community We doubled down on founder content and added two new channels. The newsletter went from 0 to 100,000 subscribers and became our biggest lead magnet. We also built a Discord that's now at 5,000 members. The community piece mattered more than we expected. Those early members became our most vocal advocates. 40K → 60K: Adding UGC This is where things changed. We brought on creators to post content about Runway. Our third channel alongside founder content and the newsletter. It worked immediately. But we were still just testing. 60K → 80K: UGC + paid ads We doubled down on UGC and layered in paid ads across Instagram. Both worked. But when we looked at the numbers, one was clearly outperforming the other. 80K → 100K: Tripled down on UGC, cut paid ads We found the channel that worked and went all in. We now have 100 UGC creators posting for us every single day. That generates roughly 3 million views per week across social media. That's where the majority of our users come from now. And we lowered our paid ad spend while doing it. The lesson: test broadly, then go narrow. We tried 5 channels in 12 months. One of them turned out to be worth 3x more than the rest combined. 100k users is a massive accomplishment and doing it in 12 months is very fast but don’t let those flashy numbers fool you. I’ve been building for this moment for nearly 4 years 🤯 Next stop -> 1 million Follow me to stay in the loop on the journey and how we do it!
