When I work with patients on stress reduction strategies, I like to invite them to think about creating rituals. So these rituals can be breathing exercises, they can be a quick meditation or journaling practice, but they can also be simply sitting down with a cup of tea. I’d love to hear some of your favorite teas in the comments below. Some of the teas that I like to use have ingredients like chamomile, passionflower, lavender, all of which can help us reduce stress and anxiety. One word of caution that I give to patients is that individuals who have irritable bowel syndrome and SIBO and who may be reactive to high FODMAPs foods - they might not react well to chamomile tea because chamomile is actually high FODMAPs. In individuals who are at risk of high blood pressure or already have high blood pressure, I ask them not to use licorice because they can increase high blood pressure, cause sodium retention, and loss of potassium.
