I think one of the greatest gifts in life is finding a friend you don’t have to perform around. You don’t have to be entertaining when you’re tired, pretend you’re okay when you’re struggling, make yourself smaller when you’re excited, or carefully calculate every word because you’re afraid they’ll judge you. You can show up exactly as you are that day—loud, quiet, happy, overwhelmed, ridiculous, emotional, completely exhausted—and somehow you’re still welcomed the same way. That’s what makes certain friendships feel like home. It’s not that they solve every problem or always know the perfect thing to say. Sometimes they can’t fix anything at all. They just sit beside you while life is messy and somehow their presence makes it feel a little less heavy. They know the embarrassing stories, the complicated parts of your past, the dreams you barely tell anyone about, and probably several versions of you that no longer exist, yet they’ve never made you feel like you needed to become somebody else to deserve their friendship. And in a world where so many relationships can make us wonder whether we’re too much or not enough, having someone around whom you can simply exist is incredibly rare. So thank you for being one of those people. Thank you for listening without always trying to fix me, laughing with me until nothing makes sense anymore, sitting with me when there isn’t anything to laugh about, and creating a friendship where I’ve never had to earn the right to belong. Some people are places you can return to, no matter how chaotic life becomes. And somehow, without ever being an actual place, you’ve become one of my favorite definitions of home.
