I agree w/ much of this. I wish Ed’s response were stronger, think reflection on how he handled this is worthwhile & would have no problem seeing him use his money/platform to help Palestinians. But this illustrates what’s bothered me about this conversation. This isn’t really a script for Ed to explain himself or apologize. It requires him to adopt your interpretation of what happened & confess to it. He has to say the venues bluffed. That he silenced Macklemore. That he was intimidated b/c he’s a coward. That his ignorance caused him to punish someone. That Palestinians are owed his forgiveness. That his actions betrayed his values. Even the orgs he donates to must satisfy a particular view of Zionism. What if Ed doesn’t believe all of that? Maybe he believes canceling the tour would’ve harmed hundreds of ppl & wasn’t right. Maybe he regrets parts of this but doesn’t believe he “silenced” Macklemore. Maybe he supports Palestinian rights & Israel’s right to exist. Maybe his understanding of Zionism isn’t yours. None of that puts his choices beyond criticism. Even if Ed released this verbatim, would the criticism end? Ppl would still say he only did it b/c he was being canceled, didn’t mean it, or was protecting his career. Once this became an issue he didn’t choose, he was in a no-win situation. You can argue he should’ve agreed w/ Macklemore, ended the tour in protest, or taken another action. But that assumes we know his options, pressures, the consequences of each choice & what he truly believed. Those are interpretations, not established facts. That’s where I get stuck. I can wish Ed had done more. I can respect Macklemore & the artists who walked. I can be horrified by what Palestinians are enduring. But if the only apology that counts requires Ed to repeat his critics’ conclusions about his motives, politics & moral failure, we’re not asking him to reflect or explain himself. We’re asking him to agree w/ us. And I’m not sure that leaves much room for ppl to care deeply about the same suffering & still disagree about what they were morally required to do in response.
