You’re missing a key point is that in that 4 year gap he became a father .. which was part of his mental nerf .. that’s why in dragon ball super hero .. piccolo used Pan to get gohan to start tapping into his potential. Hence the major power boost. It was mental nerf of being a father not a power nerf

blame the fan base👍 when the cell Saga was happening live toriyama was trying to actively transition Gohan into the main character position and a bunch of fans cried about wanting to keep Goku and that he can't stay dead. so toriyama realized that he can't transition Goku out of the main character role. that left Gohan being awesome and a lot of people loving him but you can't have two main characters👍 I feel like he was so annoyed by that he purposely assassinated gohans character at the beginning of super

Lets talk about it :
I hate the idea that Gohan was “slacking off”, he wasn’t slacking he was actually studying and building a life for himself to earn an income. That’s not slacking off. Remember that both Goku and Vegeta are actually bums in the real world.

Dragon Ball super made it really hard to be a fan of any of the characters. I mean Goku was selfish enough to risk the entire universe for a brawl. That’s not Goku at least that’s not the Goku I grew up with.

The difference is that in the buu saga, Gohan trained inconsistently but in super he completely stopped training which explains the difference in power. Also Gohan doesn't do a little training to get his ultimate form back. After Resurrection F, Gohan asks piccolo to train him again and piccolo agrees although we don't see the training happen until the tournament of power

times of peace and Gohan relying on Goku made him feel like he didn't have to train its the same reason Trunks and Goten aren't as strong as they should be they think Goku and Vegeta will take care everything. This is why 8 feel like the Morro arc is going to be super important

Tbf i think there is a mental block for him. When it comes to violence his experience with it was always pretty exclusively vs a threat, lowkey goku training him might have been the only time he didn’t fight without the opportunity potentially tryna kill him. Also unlike goku and vegeta he’s got a job.
