I told my manager I’m not going into management because I hate people. I just want to sit there, do my calculations, and go home

Chief engineer or technical program manager is the way. Total top level design and program authority, no direct reports, still a technical role, probably make more than all the personnel managers, no HR management duty

Out top engineers make about $150k. Managers make about $225k. So it’s a big gap. And then move up to director and it’s up to $350k. But it’s not for everyone.

Senior Engineer or Chief Engineer are the good titles, Engineering Managers focus too much on managing people which isn’t fun.

Truth! I wish I would have never taken the promotion from engineer to manager. I just want to calculate and solve interesting physical problems, not sending proposals, invoices, and approving PTO requests....

Everything is financially motivated. Stop all the reverse psychology. If you did it why others cannot.

I agree. I'm in engineering management, and doing engineering work is far more fun and fulfilling.

People can climb the corporate ladder without being in management. They’re different levels of engineering. Some engineers make more than managers because they’re technical.

Lowkey need to hear this. I don’t mind stepping up & taking a management role, but only when I feel I’m ready. My job has the tendency to throw people into positions their not ready for then blame them for mistakes until they eventually quit

I broadly agree but it is a little frustrating that it feels like the management route is the only way to progress your career in engineering when I'd rather eat glass than go into management. Only other thing I'd really consider is some sort of teaching/training role but that probably comes with a pay cut unfortunately.

just started my own automation company after years of being a control engineer. I rather hire a manager than do the people management myself.
