The town boomed around mineral wells and the legendary Crazy Water, becoming a resort destination known for places like the Baker Hotel. Then WWII and the growth of Camp Wolters increased the need for water, leading to the level of Lake Mineral Wells being raised—and part of Civic League Island was covered beneath it.
