Some athletes are remembered for the number of titles they won. But others are remembered for the way they fought — and to me, Kento Momota is one of them. Momota once rose to become World No. 1, won two World Championships titles, and had an almost unbelievable 2019 season with 11 tournament titles. But what makes me admire him goes far beyond the trophies. It was the image of Momota on court — calm, patient, composed, and incredibly resilient. A player who could turn seemingly simple rallies into an art form. Then, after the accident in 2020, he had to face limitations that no athlete would ever wish for. Eventually, at just 29 years old, Momota stepped away from international competition. What saddens me most isn't that Momota retired. It's that we'll never know how far he could have gone if that accident had never happened. But perhaps an athlete's legacy isn't measured by asking, “How many more titles could he have won?” Instead, it is measured by asking: “What did he leave behind in the hearts of those who love the sport?” For me, Kento Momota left behind perseverance, resilience, and a fighting spirit that refused to give up easily.
