THE STORY BEHIND
THE STORY BEHIND "MASTER, SPEAK! THY SERVANT HEARETH" “Master, Speak! Thy Servant Heareth” is a hymn centred on listening for God’s voice and responding with willing obedience. Its words draw inspiration from the biblical story of the young Samuel, who heard God calling him during the night and, after being guided by Eli, responded: “Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.” (1 Samuel 3:9–10). The hymn was written by Frances J. Crosby (Fanny Crosby), the celebrated American hymn writer who became blind shortly after birth. The text reflects one of the recurring themes in Crosby’s hymns: a heart completely surrendered to God, ready to hear His direction and faithfully follow His call. The opening words, “Master, speak! Thy servant heareth, waiting for Thy gracious word,” establish the hymn’s central prayer. Rather than asking only for blessings, the singer asks to hear, understand and obey God’s instruction. The hymn continues with imagery of a servant waiting attentively for the Master’s command, expressing humility, trust and readiness for service. Its message remains especially meaningful in Christian worship because it encourages believers to cultivate a listening heart, not merely to speak to God, but also to pause, listen and respond. At its heart, “Master, Speak! Thy Servant Heareth” is a hymn of surrender, spiritual attentiveness and obedience, reminding Christians that hearing God’s call carries with it a willingness to follow where He leads.
