An ankle sprain is not a “rest until it feels better” injury. Lateral ankle sprains are extremely common in runners, yet they’re often treated with some version of “RICE and rest.” While the initial phase should focus on protecting the tissues and managing pain and swelling, prolonged rest isn’t the goal. When tolerated, early movement and progressive weight-bearing help restore mobility and begin rebuilding the ankle’s capacity for load. Rehab should progressively address: Mobility → strength → balance/proprioception → dynamic control → running-specific load tolerance The exercises in this video show examples of how that progression can look, from early-stage to more advanced work. The exact timeline and the progression itself will vary based on the severity of the injury, symptoms, strength, mobility, and response to loading. And this matters because a previous ankle sprain increases your risk of another one. Feeling pain-free doesn’t necessarily mean the ankle has regained the strength, stability, and capacity needed for running. So think beyond: Sprain → rest → pain goes away → run Instead think: Protect → move → strengthen → load → return to running. Let’s work together! If you’re interested in virtual options, @gorunstronger offers personalized run and strength coaching, virtual consultations, training plans, injury programs, and our app’s monthly strength subscription. For in-person assessments and physical therapy you can book an appointment with me at Healthy Baller in Washington, DC.
