CAPTAIN’S LOG: THE VEGETABLE FRONTIER 🌱🍅🍉 September 15–16, 2026 The captain has returned from a week at the beach, and apparently the Vegetable Frontier decided it could survive without me. Rude, but impressive. First, yesterday's harvest. 🍅 I came home and picked a PILE of tomatoes, including three from the infamous Big Beef plant, which has spent most of the season giving me some truly questionable tomatoes. Except... one of yesterday's may have actually been a real slicing tomato. Like, PUT-IT-ON-A-SANDWICH tomato. Naturally, I didn't realize that until after I cut it wrong. 😂 There are two more out there, though, and we're watching those babies closely. Big Beef may finally be attempting a redemption tour. Then I walked over to the ALASKA PEAS. HOLY CRAP. I left town with little pea plants. I came home to PEAS. They have taken off, climbed, filled in and apparently decided that while I was gone was the perfect time to become an actual crop. 🌱 But here's the part I really wasn't expecting. The cucumber. The cantaloupe. THE WATERMELON. These were plants I genuinely thought were winding down. I would've completely understood if I came home and they were done. NOPE. All three have pushed out NEW growth. And not one sad little leaf we're desperately calling progress. We're talking a LOT of fresh green growth. The cucumber has basically started another chapter. The cantaloupe continues to amaze me, even if I'm still not convinced it's ever going to give me an actual cantaloupe. 😂 And the watermelon, after already giving us that absolutely glorious watermelon before I left, apparently isn't finished either. That watermelon alone made this entire ridiculous front-yard kiddie-pool garden worth it. 🍉 So I leave for the beach for one week and come home to a tomato harvest, Alaska peas going absolutely bonkers, and three plants I thought were nearing the end suddenly putting on fresh growth like somebody hit the reset button. Apparently the secret to gardening is for me to LEAVE. 😂 The Vegetable Frontier continues. 🌱
