On the morning of December 9, 2024, a group of hunters in Lunenburg County, Virginia, roughly midway between Richmond and Danville, tracked a black bear until it climbed up a tree to escape. As is standard practice once a bear is treed, the group backed away from the trunk before taking a shot. Not everyone had cleared the area first. According to his wife, 58-year-old Lester C. Harvey was still standing about 10 feet from the base of the tree, having stayed behind to retrieve his dog. When another hunter in the group fired, the roughly 110-pound bear fell from the tree and struck Harvey directly. A member of the hunting party, described as having medical training, immediately began administering first aid while waiting for emergency responders. Once fire and EMS arrived, Harvey was transported to a hospital and later transferred to a critical care unit in Richmond. He was initially listed in serious but stable condition, though his condition later deteriorated.
