Alex’s aunt, Holly Jones (Melissa Leo), who lives alone and claims Alex was traumatized after his parents disappeared. The Twist & Resolution Joy escapes from her captors and mutters to Keller that "you were there," leading Keller to realize the girls were being held at Holly Jones's home. Holly and her late husband were devout Christians who lost their son to cancer and, in their grief, decided to "war against God" by kidnapping children, using mazes and python venom to break their faith. Alex Jones was actually their very first kidnapping victim. When Keller goes to confront Holly, she shoots him in the leg at gunpoint and traps him beneath a hidden underground pit on her property. Loki subsequently arrives at Holly's house, kills her in a tense standoff, and rescues Anna. The Ending With Anna and Joy safe, the case appears closed. In the final scene, Detective Loki stands outside Holly’s property late at night as crime scene investigators wrap up. Just as he turns to leave, he hears a faint, muffled whistle—Keller using his daughter's emergency whistle from deep inside the underground pit.
