As someone who understands the numbers, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that being debt free feels much better than the promise of having a lot of money in future while struggling with debt today. I won’t argue the maths, im merely stating that the math doesn’t account for the emotional aspect of debt.

How would you invest 10k pm on an RA when it has a 46k annual cap whilst anything after will be penalized.

Investing R10k per month is risky, there are many other things that pop up and need money. I saw when I finished paying my car, I planned to save all the money but alas there was always something else that needed money.

What if the source of funds is not pension but a bonus from work or random windfall? Is early settlement vs investment still favour investment?

No future returns will ever convince me not to pay off my bond, I am happy to be poor in the future while in a bond free house. But that’s just me 🤝🤝🤝

as a CA(SA), CFA and CFP.
It's not one-size-fits-all.
1. Historic market performance is not an indication of the future.
2. The utility of money is higher in your youth. So no debt and higher disposable income might not be the financial choice. However, it will reduce your financial stress and make you happier.
3. You forgot future taxes in your calculation of the RA, as you should compare both after tax.
4. Pension funds are limited due to Reg 28. If you have more disposable income, you can be more selective on investment wrapper and can start off you tax free shares journey
