With no roads, trails, or landing permits allowed for boats or aircraft, it remains one of the most pristine and culturally significant locations in the Hawaiian Islands. In ancient times, the valley was a hallowed resting place for Hawaiian royalty (Aliʻi). Because a chief's remains (iwi) carried powerful spiritual mana, trusted warriors were tasked with concealing their bones high within the sheer 1,200-foot cliff walls. To protect the absolute secrecy of these sacred burial sites, legend says the warriors who transported the chiefs' remains would take their own lives or be sworn to eternal secrecy, lending the valley its haunting and revered moniker. The name of this place translates to "conch shell" in the Hawaiian language, the name originates from the deep, resonant echo produced when northerly winds rush through the towering 90-foot natural rock arch that divides the beach from the valley. A dramatic 90-foot natural rock formation carved by centuries of wind and sea separates the golden-sand shoreline into two distinct coves. A seasonal waterfall also cascades down the valley cliff, flowing through the area towards the sea. The wider valley is also tied to legends of the Menehune, the legendary mythical little people of Hawaiian folklore said to have lived on the islands before the arrival of ancient Polynesians. Setting foot on the beach via any motorized watercraft, kayak, or aircraft is strictly prohibited and heavily fined to preserve its sacred status. The sole legal way to reach the sand is by an intense, unregulated open-water swim (roughly 400 yards) from an offshore boat or neighboring Kalalau Beach during calm summer conditions, a hazardous endeavor reserved strictly for expert swimmers equipped with fins. Because of its surreal, untouched topography, Honopū Beach has served as a dramatic filming location for numerous major motion pictures, including: • King Kong (1976 remake) • Six Days, Seven Nights (1998) • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) If you plan to go to this place, remember this is a burial ground, and respect the area with the utmost reverence.
