🚨The Surprising Space Discovery That Helped Lead to Wi-Fi. 📡 The technology behind modern Wi-Fi has an unexpected connection to astronomy. In the 1990s, researchers at Australia’s CSIRO were working on a difficult wireless-communication problem: how to reliably transmit data when radio signals bounce and interfere with each other. ⸻ 🌌 Some of the techniques developed at CSIRO grew out of research in radio astronomy and signal processing. Astronomers routinely have to extract extremely faint radio signals from noisy environments, and that work helped researchers develop sophisticated ways of handling reflected and distorted radio signals. ⸻ 💻 CSIRO scientists developed a key wireless technology called WLAN, based on a technique known as multicarrier modulation. Their patented work became part of the technological foundations used in IEEE 802.11 wireless networking, the family of standards behind Wi-Fi. ⸻ 📱 The result was a technology that eventually became part of everyday life. The same broader scientific toolkit used to understand and process radio signals helped enable reliable high-speed wireless communication between devices.
