A little perilla follow-up because the comments on my last video brought up some really good points. First, no, I’m not Korean. I love to travel, and that’s often how I discover new ingredients and dishes. I first tried perilla at a Korean BBQ restaurant at the Namdaemun Market in Seoul, loved it, and eventually decided to grow it myself. I planted it once, and it has been self-seeding throughout my garden ever since. If you’re considering growing perilla because it can be expensive at the store, there are a few things to know: • It can spread aggressively. Perilla produces a lot of seeds, so check your local regulations and consider your surroundings before planting. If you want to limit its spread, remove flower heads before they mature and drop seed. • The leaves are naturally fuzzy. Someone described the texture as “Scotch-Brite,” which I can understand. Washing the leaves thoroughly under running water or running the leaf quickly through an open flame makes the texture much less noticeable. • Perilla and shiso can be confusing. They are different cultivated types within the same species, and you’ll commonly see Korean perilla, green shiso, and purple/red shiso. • There are animal safety concerns. Perilla can be toxic to livestock, particularly cattle, so it should not be grown where grazing animals can access it. I also want to thank the experienced gardeners in the comments who take the time to share their knowledge and point out things I may have missed. I feel very fortunate to learn from such knowledgeable gardeners here. That exchange of information is one of the things I appreciate most about this community. If you’re growing perilla, know your plant, know your local regulations, and be prepared the bounty! #Perilla #Shiso #UrbanGardening #KitchenGarden #GardenToTable
