Dogs and cats are banned, hunting is forbidden, and the rabbits have learned that every visitor might be carrying food. The island has a darker past: between 1929 and 1945 it was a secret poison gas factory for the Imperial Japanese Army and was erased from official maps. Wildlife experts say the current rabbits are unrelated to the lab animals, but they warn visitors not to overfeed them junk food.
