@kalbohydra8s: 53 years ago today (September 7), the song/single "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" British singer, composer and pianist Sir Elton John was released in the UK through DJM(UK) Records with "Screw You (Young Man's Blues)" as its B-Side track and in the US a month later. Written by John and lyricist Bernie Taupin, it is the title track on John's seventh studio album of the same name. The song title was in reference to L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz film and book series. The song topped the US Cash Box Top 100 while peaking at number 2 in the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 7 in the US Adult Contemporary (Billboard). The song also topped the Canadian chart while it entered the Top 10 spots in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway South Africa and the United Kingdom. It received gold and multiple platinum certifications from different record associations around the globe for selling more than two million copies both in physical and streaming sales. Music critics and fans gave the song a generally positive response. Like what Record World dubbed the song as "a gorgeous John-Taupin tune that rivals their very best compositions" with a "beautiful melody woven through a standout lyric." While Janis Schacht of Circus characterized it as "delicate and beautiful". And AllMusic magazine commented that the song is "a vocal triumph" and a "pinnacle of its style". This 1973 global hit became a cultural standard that further cemented John's superstar status and remains his defining emotional core. So, let's go back to the early 70s and reminisce this timeless masterpiece from the legendary duo of Elton John and Bernie Taupin.
