@misao.star: In 2012, Linus Torvalds famously told NVIDIA “FUCK YOU” during a Q&A at Aalto University. The frustration was largely about NVIDIA's relationship with the Linux community and the difficulties Linux users faced with NVIDIA hardware, especially Optimus hybrid graphics on laptops. Getting NVIDIA GPUs working properly on Linux could require community-developed workarounds, while NVIDIA's proprietary driver model made it much harder for Linux developers and distributions to integrate the hardware cleanly. Linus was particularly frustrated by what he saw as NVIDIA being unwilling to cooperate with the Linux ecosystem despite Linux being used heavily across the technology industry. Fast-forward years later and NVIDIA's relationship with Linux looks very different. In 2022, NVIDIA released its GPU kernel modules as open source under GPL/MIT licensing, initially focusing on data-center hardware and later expanding support to GeForce and workstation GPUs. NVIDIA subsequently moved toward making its open kernel modules the standard direction for modern GPUs, while also making major improvements to its Linux graphics stack, including DRM/KMS and Wayland support.
