As a Canadian I never understood this, cause Canada has provinces which is equivalent to states but we still always say Canada, unless they specifically ask for the city

and they always make the argument that “but if we say we’re from the united states people always follow that up with asking WHERE in the states” as if asking someone where they’re from in a country isn’t a perfectly normal follow up question when making small talk (and also a very universal experience that isn’t exclusive to americans) 😭

it's usually because if we say we are from the U.S, its met with "well obviously." and then we are asked what state or part of the U.S. it's easier to just go ahead and say the part. It is really dumb though when we say places in the U.S. that aren't well known and expect people to know anyways.
