@kiore.speaks: Accountability should leave room for somebody to become different than the person you’re holding accountable. #kiorespeaks #differentlenses #accountability #communitybuilding
chronically online people constantly talking about how the brain isn't fully developed until 25, but then canceling somebody for something they said 10 years ago when they were 13

Also you can’t hold someone “accountable” while not be willing to forgive them for past behavior

People don’t want accountability, they just want you to have never made the mistake on the first place. So it’s an impossible standard. If we want accountability that means we need to actually have a realistic idea of what that looks like to be able to move on.

I hate the "it's not my job to educate you" like one of the first and I'd even argue biggest steps for advocating is spreading information. Don't just tell people "google is free" because yeah it is but it is also full of misinformation. Not everyone knows how to research properly so they could easily fall into confirmation bias. Plus if you are presenting an argument you should be able to back it up with a source anyways, so if someone is asking more about what you are telling them it is not unreasonable for you to have to back up your stance.

anytime you group yourself into "the good people" and others into "the bad people" things WILL go wrong.
NOBODY is pure good. and one bad act doesnt make someone a bad person.
a "bad person" can change, or at least be helpful in some ways. a "good person" can say all the "right" things, while being an active detriment to your cause, or doing terrible things that people ignore because they are "one of the good ones".
You are not perfect. and nobody else is either. people need to deal with it.

And then when people do grow and change, they call it the “bare minimum.” Like, why can’t we give credit where credit is due? 🙄

me seeing that “response incoming” banner and waiting to hear your take because I 100% agree with that creator. People ABSOLUTELY dehumanize “morally inferior” people and use it as an excuse to act like pieces of shit.

Also there's a phrase for continuously holding people's past mistakes over their heads, but that phrase is not "holding people accountable" it's called "holding a grudge." And we used to understand that that's a bad thing to do, but we've repackaged it into "holding people accountable" to mask it.

I think how people approach 'accountability' online is how people approach boycotting in this app, no end goal in sight other than temporary outrage and no principle or metric to change things for better 😔

I've learned two things being ont this app;
1. When people say "accountability", what they MEAN is punishment.
2. Getting right and doing right, while important, will never be more important than BEING right.

Cancel culture and they still support people that literally was in court and didn't go in prison or went. But no, let's cancel a person that said a bad world when they were 9 years old

Exactly. Especially hard on the "It's not my job to educate you" that they always parrot. It's also not my job to push a cart back to the collection area, it's not my job to pick up litter and toss it in the trash, it's not my job to take care of the stray cats in my neighborhood.
But if I want a better world, want a safer world and kinder world, I have to put in the work to do it. Putting in work is more than screaming at people online without putting in effort for education and accountability. At that point they're no better than a buzzer in a game show going off whenever an incorrect answer is given.

also when you decide someone is irredemable and decide every-and-any thing you do to them is justified, congrats, you've become significantly more harmful than any behaviour you were condemning.
