​Former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Todd Lyons spoke out on Newsmax regarding a California bill restricting public employment for former federal immigration personnel. He called the measure "political grandstanding" and "discriminatory." ​The proposed state legislation, known as the "GTFO Act," passed the legislature and was presented to the governor on Sept. 14. Starting in 2028, it would bar former sworn officers or contractors involved in federal immigration enforcement from state and local public jobs, with certain exceptions. ​"I am stunned, but it's something that I expect, right?" Lyons said. "This is just more political grandstanding. And again, you know, it's discriminatory." ​Lyons argued that elected officials are targeting officers "for just doing their duty." ​"Men and women of ICE are out there protecting California, protecting the rest of the United States from really bad actors, from suspected terrorists, from cartel members, child s*x offenders," he said. ​"Yet they want to go ahead and they want to pin a target on the backs of these brave men and women that are out there every day just to make political points." ​"It's disgusting. It's political theater," Lyons added. ​Lyons also supported federal efforts to limit permanent residency for individuals likely to rely on government assistance. He argued that applicants should be financially independent. ​"You are not supposed to come to this country unless you can support yourself," Lyons said. "To bring in all these people, just to have them set up on institutional welfare and, you know, public charge is just wrong." ​He stated that the policy ensures individuals receiving a green card "can support themselves and bring in value to the United States of America."
