JA LUO :
I always told myself back then, “We are not poor. Look, there isn’t a single day we go without a meal. We live in our own home, on our own land. We have cattle, we have land to cultivate, and we have never been sent away from school. Most importantly, we always gather together as a family to eat. Dad tells us stories, we laugh together, and sometimes he tells us scary stories that make us afraid to go outside alone at night. So no matter how many times our parents said they had no money, I always thought, ‘We are not poor.’”
And now I realize I was right. Maybe we weren’t rich in money, but we were rich in so many other ways. We had a kind of happiness and togetherness that money couldn’t buy.
That was a part of life we may never experience in exactly the same way again. I miss everything about my teenage years. I miss those simple days. I miss 2010–2020, before COVID changed the world. 😭
Sometimes, you don’t realize you were living the good old days until they become memories.
