The Sukhoi Su-27KUB (also known as the Su-33UB) was a two-seat, side-by-side carrier-based fighter prototype that stands out as one of the most unconventional naval aircraft ever built. The "KUB" designation stood for Korabelny Uchebno-Boyevoi, meaning "Ship-borne, Training, Combat," and it was designed to solve a critical problem for the Russian Navy: the single-seat Su-33 was extremely difficult for young pilots to master, especially the harrowing task of landing on the Admiral Kuznetsov, and the existing Su-25UTG trainer was too underpowered to properly prepare them. By placing the instructor and student side-by-side in a wide cockpit, the Su-27KUB gave both crew members the same eye-line and vastly improved communication during complex deck operations, while also allowing the aircraft to serve as a fully capable strike, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare platform. It first flew on April 29, 1999, piloted by the legendary test pilot Viktor Pugachev, and featured aerodynamic improvements over the standard Su-33, including a larger adaptive wing with a flexible composite leading edge, enlarged canards, and extensive use of composite materials, which improved its lift-to-drag ratio and extended its range by 15–20%. Despite its promise, the Su-27KUB remained a private venture that never secured a production order, as the Russian Navy chose to modernize its existing Su-33 fleet and procure the MiG-29K instead, leaving the sole completed prototype to languish at the Zhukovsky airfield near Moscow. #sukhoi #su33ub #su27kub #aviation
