The ceremony was organised to demonstrate Newham’s solidarity with the Palestinian people and to acknowledge the humanitarian suffering in Gaza. The event was also attended by James Asser MP for West Ham and Beckton, council staff, local councillors and representatives from political parties across the borough. During the ceremony, Mayor Forhad Hussain offered his deepest condolences to Ambassador Zomlot following the loss of members of his family, including seven-year-old Sidra. Speaking at the event, Mayor Hussain said the Palestinian flag had been raised “with pride” to recognise the identity, dignity and rights of the Palestinian people and to express solidarity on behalf of the people of Newham. He also welcomed recent steps taken by the Labour Government on the issue and said he would continue to use his voice to call for lasting peace. Mayor Hussain described the occasion as solemn but important, saying it sent a message that the Palestinian people had not been forgotten. Mayor Hussain also thanked Ambassador Zomlot for travelling to Newham to attend the ceremony. He reaffirmed that Newham stood against Islamophobia, antisemitism and hatred in all its forms, adding that everyone in the borough should be able to live without prejudice or fear. Ambassador Husam Zomlot thanked Mayor Hussain, James Asser MP and the people of Newham for their solidarity with the Palestinian people. The Ambassador said it was a pleasure to attend the first Palestinian flag-raising ceremony and to celebrate the relationship between Newham, which he described as a uniquely diverse part of London, and the Palestinian people. He highlighted the difficulties facing Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, saying that for those experiencing the situation directly, it remained important to know that people around the world had not forgotten them. James Asser MP, Member of Parliament for West Ham and Beckton, said that when he first met Ambassador Zomlot, he had spoken about the strength of feeling in Newham. He said the ceremony provided an opportunity for the Ambassador to see the scale of that support for himself. James Asser MP also referred to Newham as “the world in a single borough” and highlighted the area’s longstanding tradition of supporting communities and families around the world during times of need. The ceremony brought together representatives from across Newham’s political and civic life, including councillors from different political parties, council staff and members of the community. The raising of the Palestinian flag at Newham Town Hall marked a significant civic occasion, bringing together local government representatives, Palestinian diplomatic representation and members of the community to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and to highlight the continuing humanitarian concerns surrounding Gaza and the wider Palestinian territories.
