@patrickmouratoglou: There’s a new trend on tour: players saying after a match that they’re happy despite losing. To be honest, I find that hard to believe. Here’s why! #tennis

I think Carlos coming back from injury, thought he would do a lot worse

Exactly and when Sabalenka is unhappy because she lost people hate her for it. It is not fair. People are too woke always happy and be positive but losing will upset someone and that’s fair.

It's not like he's happy that he lost - he's happy despite the loss. He meant that he was happy with his performance, the level of play at the very moment. He said that he is also a little disappointed. Being gracious for losing means that you won't let your emotions to make you feel that you're not worth winning, but that you will learn from this defeat and accept that today, at this match - your opponent was better. This feeling makes you not only humble but also motivated to improve yourself

I think Carlos was just happy to know he still can play tennis but his fitness was not enough

Not sure I’d call it a “trend”. More of a mature outlook. You can hate to lose and have the mindset of a champion and still graciously accept the fact that you’ve lost. The 2 things can coexist

there's a difference of being a sore loser and gracious in defeat. are you trying to say that to be a champion you need to show tantrums. being gracious in defeat helps their mental health and when they become successful they don't allow it to go to their head.

I have to agree here. I was around Lance Armstrong early in his career on local training rides & races. He absolutely hated (but rarely lost) losing.

Emotional intelligence and control. Part of being a great champion.

Being gracious in defeat is an outward display of respect. Doesn’t have to reflect internal feelings. Alcaraz praised Ben after the match and said he took positives out of the Open. Of course he wasn’t happy losing. You don’t have to ‘buy it’, but that’s the sign of a champion who has respect for the game.

it's not a trend all of them still try to win but if you still lose you have to try to look at the positive aspects of your match. that is sports psychology 1.1

I disagree, I think this new generation is trying to see the positive in there. They both played awesome matches with a really high level, maybe the best men’s and women’s match of the tournament so makes sense to me why they are happy with their performance. Saying “I don’t buy it” just because Serena was never happy when she lost isn’t fair.

They all competed ferociously during the game; after the game its great to be gracious - there is no contradiction

Carlos himself has said he hates to lose.. that is in general. In this case i think he was saying more in terms of how he was able to play… especially coming off being injured. He will obviously be disappointed to lose but i think he is more happy that he can fully trust his body

I mean: I see two strong factors: 1. With social media, there’s much less pressure when it comes to prize money. You still make money even if you lose a match. 2. The press would go after you if you had bad PR. I don’t think you’d want to deal with that mentally, PLUS it would have a negative impact on your social media presence.

the worst thing is not losing, it's losing and injured. Losing, you can play the next competition, injured? nope
