30 days is all it took to grow these Longans are one of my favourite fruits, so here are a few of my favourite longan facts: 1. They're related to lychees and rambutans: all 3 are in the soapberry family and taste similar… but longans are smaller and less sweet 2. Longan comes from the Chinese name 龍眼 / 龙眼 (lóngyǎn), which literally means ‘dragon eye’ because when you peel one, the white flesh with the dark seed inside looks exactly like an eyeball 3. They grow in massive clusters: one tree can produce hundreds of fruits hanging in big drooping bunches, and the trees are huge (they can grow up to 12 metres tall and live for decade) 4. The seed is toxic: it contains saponins and should never be eaten, but technically you can make a natural soap by simmering the husks in water to extract the saponins and make a cleansing liquid. 5. They dry like raisins: dried longans are a popular snack in Southeast Asia and taste almost caramel-like 6. They bloom only once a year and need a period of cool, dry weather to trigger flowering, which is why they're tricky to grow outside tropical climates 7. It takes 6-10 years to grow longans… So yeah, they’re the coolest. I’m tracking this entire experiment in the ‘Grow It’ app, and I’d love for you to track either this one, or the other 400+ options in the app with me!! 🔗Download on APP STORE Here: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/grow-it-plant-scanner-lab/id6762371470 🔗Download on GOOGLE PLAY Here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.growithjessie.growit&pcampaignid=web_share
