On January 15, 2019, 18-year-old Berfin Özek was walking home in Iskenderun, Turkey, when her ex-boyfriend, Casim Ozan Çeltik, threw a liquid at her face, declaring “If I can’t have you, no one can.” The event caused her to lose one eye, endure b*rn injuries across her face, chest, and arms, and retain only about 30% vision in the other eye. Çeltik was arrested and, in January 2020, sentenced to 13½ years. In April 2020, Berfin unexpectedly withdrew her complaint, writing letters of love and remorse while stating she loved him dearly and was “uncomfortable… seeing him locked in four walls.” Her lawyers, unwilling to support their “love,” resigned.
