“I could see him going under.” A mum has told of her horror at watching her son and nephew disappearing under the water moments before rescuers pulled them to safety. Two young boys were seconds from downing after being trapped beneath Blackpool Pier when rescuers got to them just in time. Footage of the rescue shows Subby, 10, and Kizza, 12, clinging to the structure as water rushes around them on 28 May. The boys had been enjoying a fun family day out when they became stranded by the fast-rising tide, clinging to the pier for around 40 minutes. Zully, from Leeds, had tried to wade out to reach them, but was pushed back by the waves. Her nephew, Ted, 21, also tried to help, but was left clinging to the pier. A member of the public called 999, and for the 11th time in just a week Blackpool RNLI's volunteer crew launched a rescue – arriving just four minutes after the call was made. Zully said: “I knew he’d cling on if he could hear my voice telling him not to let go, but by now the water was rising fast and I could see him going under. “It didn’t feel real. It was like I was in some kind of helpless dream – a nightmare. I could see my nephew hanging on, but I could see the fear in his eyes. I could see my boy submerged next to the poles of the pier.” Rescuers got to the boys in minutes and took them to shore where paramedics were waiting. Zully said: “When I saw Subby coming in on that lifeboat and being carried away, it was like a miracle. I thought he’d gone. He survived because of these people who are volunteers. “God bless these people who came. I can’t comprehend the fact they are just normal people with jobs and their own family, but they’d risk that to save my family. “They don’t get enough credit for what they do. Nothing mattered to those people in that boat but saving lives and that’s incredible.” The RNLI is using the footage and the family's ordeal to promote its Find Your Float campaign, warning that incoming tides can rapidly cut people off. Chris Cousens, RNLI Water Safety Lead, urged beachgoers to check tide tables, pay attention to local safety signs, and carry a fully charged mobile phone to call 999 for the Coastguard in an emergency. #5news #RNLI #blackpool
