There are foreign reports, including European ones, from before the anti-China propaganda that exists today. It was worse than Afghanistan at its darkest period over there. Since Sharia is no longer enforced and Uyghurs don’t live under “Islam” but according to the rules of the Communist Party, this upset some extremists within the community, but mostly extremists outside China who want to keep portraying all Uyghurs as Muslims, which they weren’t originally that is, an entire ethnic group that is Muslim. Most of the Uyghurs you see on social media promoting “Free East Turkestan” aren’t Uyghurs from China; they weren’t born there. Many of them are people who are paid to create fake accounts and spam every video that talks about Uyghurs, and a large proportion of them come from Muslim-majority countries. And of course, Western governments are rubbing their hands together over it, just like with Hong Kong and Taiwan, in an attempt to fragment China. China has restored order in Hong Kong and strengthened security in Xinjiang, which you can visit and where you can see real Uyghurs.
