We probably don't need another person telling us to “use our phones less.” Most of us already know we spend too much time scrolling. The harder question is: why is it so difficult to stop? Short-form apps are designed around an incredibly simple loop: Open → consume → swipe → something interesting appears → repeat. There’s no natural stopping point. You don't reach the “end” of TikTok or Instagram. There’s always another video, another post, another notification. And the problem with excessive screen use isn't simply the number on your Screen Time report. It's what those hours are replacing. More time sitting can mean less movement. Scrolling late at night can mean less sleep. Passive consumption can replace hobbies, exercise, time outside, or actually being present with the people around you. Research has found associations between higher recreational screen use and things like poorer sleep, lower physical activity, poorer wellbeing and, particularly in young people, several negative health outcomes. But it's also important to remember that not all screen time is equal — an hour learning something isn't the same as an hour mindlessly scrolling. So what actually helps? Instead of relying entirely on willpower, add friction to the behaviour you want to reduce. Make the unwanted behaviour slightly harder. And make the behaviour you want to do slightly easier. For example: 📱 Put addictive apps somewhere less convenient. 🔕 Turn off unnecessary notifications. 🌙 Keep your phone away from your bed. 🚶 Take movement breaks instead of sitting for hours uninterrupted. ⏱️ Set intentional periods where certain apps are unavailable. 🏋️ And most importantly, replace some scrolling with something physical. Adults are generally encouraged to get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, and even smaller amounts of movement are better than none. Physical activity can also benefit sleep, mood and overall health. That's actually the idea behind something I've been building called GainLock. Instead of simply telling you “you've used TikTok too much,” GainLock lets you block the apps that are eating your time. When you try to open one, you have to earn the screen time back by moving — doing reps like squats, push-ups, lunges, burpees, etc., or even walking. So the goal isn't to eliminate your phone. It's to change the relationship: Instead of scrolling → movement → scrolling. Your phone becomes something you can still enjoy, but getting more time on it requires you to put something back into your body first. Because maybe the answer to spending less time on our phones isn't having more self-control. Maybe it's making scrolling cost something. #screentime #digitalwellbeing #phoneaddiction #dopaminedetox #healthylifestyle
