Animals are wonderful life forms, each with a life that matters to the one living it. They do not need to accomplish something impressive to justify being here. Their lives have value simply because they are alive. Humans sometimes have trouble accepting that, even about ourselves. Many of the qualities we admire in people are qualities we can observe in animals: loyalty, patience, courage, curiosity, and devotion to those they care about. A dog does not need to know how much money you have before deciding you are worth loving. Animals can find satisfaction in companionship, play, a good meal, or a comfortable place in the sun. We can spend a lifetime chasing success and overlook the ordinary pleasures that made the day worth living. Meanwhile, humans have developed some habits that hardly deserve admiration. We humiliate people to make ourselves feel important, measure one another by wealth and status, and find elaborate excuses for suffering we could prevent. We have built entire industries that depend on keeping the pain of animals out of sight. A goat is not concerned about whether another goat has an impressive job title. We are the ones who have turned those distinctions into reasons to treat another life as less valuable. And we are supposed to be the ones who know better. I think we would benefit from approaching animals with more respect and a little humility. Our intelligence gives us the ability to understand their needs and the power to protect them. It should also give us the sense to recognize that we have things to learn from them. Animals deserve our care whether or not they are useful to us, entertaining to us, or willing to love us back.
