I was WHOLLY unprepared for the fact that I would “want” it too…. Why? Because everyone framed it as what boys wanted.

My daughter gets horrified when I try to talk to her about things too much and she’ll cut me off saying “I know I know”. I know she doesn’t know but I get the uncomfortable feelings. So I have found that sending her great videos (like this) and then asking her about the video later in person or over text helps open up the conversation.

I’m a Christian. Grew up in a Christian household. The only sex ed I received was “don’t have sex until marriage”.

I told my mom i was scared to have sex after stitches from childbirth. I was 23 and still having pain because they stitched me up slightly wrong. Her response was, "Men have needs. " So ya, I was learning things the hard way too. My daughters will have a much different experience.

Yes! And “how to respond”. And not just regarding sexual coercion, but all the red flags; such as verbal abuse, and passive aggressive comments. I was, as you said, unprepared.

I don’t understand how parents can think it’s okay to leave their children with so little proper sexual education. Yes, it’s awkward. You know that’s more awkward, all the negative things that will happen if the young people don’t know the reality of sex and the struggles of relationships. Personally, I’ve never felt wanted or desired. I’ve heard so many horror stories about relationships, marriage, etc that I’ve avoided women like the plague. I know a lot about the mechanics of sex, but I’m woefully ignorant of how to make a relationship work.

I will ALWAYS be grateful for the talk my mom gave me. I learned about how sex worked mechanically through cultural osmosis, which I think she was grateful for, but we were on a drive when she said “boys will tell you absolutely anything to get into your pants, and none of them are ever going to be a good enough reason to do something you don’t want to”. I was 13, and I didn’t come out unscathed but I approached things with a lot more fortitude than if she’d never given me that wisdom.

THIS!!! When I was 13, my mom warned me that if a man ever threatened to off himself if I didn’t xyz, call his bluff because he’s just trying to manipulate me. Boy did that conversation come in handy when my boyfriend at 16 tried that tactic. It was a wake up call for me for that relationship. Her telling me that among other things spared me from so much.

There was a mom on Oprah(?) that shocked the audience bc she bought her daughter a private massager. She knew that if her daughter didn't know what a genuine O felt like she would think a boy was "making" her feel that good. People still freak out about it but it makes so much sense.

The developing teenage brain is a bit like the cave/shadow puppets allegory in that you think you are mature enough to make those calls as a 15 year old, and by the time your brain is done developing and you actually understand it all, it’s too late.
