I’ve been doing this for 25 years… I teach 5th grade and a couple of my students can’t tie their shoes and two don’t know the entire alphabet

Year 33 for me and I remember when we first had dry erased boards in the classroom and that was a complete mind blow for teaching🤣

28 years in. It's exhausting. I'm an elem principal now and I agree with everything you said. I have to tell my teachers NOT to reply immediately, NOT to answer the ClassDojo message in the evening. I believe they should maintain their work/life balance. As for the documenting, I agree it's gotten to be too much. unfortunately it's also related to the parent/ school relationship changing so much. the majority of my time is spent responding to parents and having to provide 'proof' that something has or hasn't happened. Sometimes the teacher documents to protect themselves, which is an absolute shame. I have never been more ready to retire. And not bc of the kids. Bc of the parents.

Taugh for 30 years. So glad I no longer do. Teaching isn’t teaching anymore. It’s all paperwork!

I retired early a few months ago, I miss the students, but I don’t miss all the “other” things you mentioned. I simply could not do it anymore.

Also- as a kindergarten teacher of 30 years I’m not teaching anything I’ve taught in the past- the FUN activities. Sadly, it’s all scripted curriculum all day. I hate it.

And not to forget.. all the lesson planning. The differentiating lesson planning. Meeting all the standards. The weekly blog to the parents. No planning time so you have to use your evenings to correct assignments. Then to top it off the pay.

Started in 1998 as well. The differences are astounding. This hits the nail on the head. Thank you for so eloquently stating this.

we wanted to become teachers because we thought it’ll be like 2006 … now at the finish line it’s NOTHING like 2006. didn’t think the whole career would be like this nationwide
