The only way to know for sure is to compare the maintenance logs to what evidence can be found within the wreckage of the chopper. Upholstery isn’t necessarily an indicator of maintenance especially if it is in constant use. The interior is going to experience everything from light wear and tear to heavy abuse of the interior depending on a variety of factors. This was an incredibly tragic incident. My colleague, an NBC affiliate journalist knew those on the chopper and is completely gutted. The entire NBC family is struggling right now, there aren’t enough or even the right words to describe the profound devastation so many are feeling right now from the loss of an incredible team and a beautiful light in this world.

its a "theory" sure. but the carpet and seat fabrics (the upholstery) have nothing to do with maintenance of the aircraft. can it be connected to maintenance laziness? maybe. that's all speculation. investigators gotta go into those books and make sure that they were not just repairing deficiencies, but also doing proper maintenance after a certain amount of flight hours, and days in fleet.
