@carolinejhingory: There is a psychological comfort in having one explanation for every disappointment. Racism is real. So are bias, discrimination and unequal opportunity. But intellectual honesty requires enough confidence to admit that every rejection, awkward interaction, missed promotion, bad customer service experience or uncomfortable room does not automatically come from the same source. Sometimes the explanation is race. Sometimes it is class. Sometimes it is culture. Sometimes it is personality. Sometimes somebody else was simply better positioned. Sometimes the other person was having a terrible day. And sometimes our own insecurity walks into the room five minutes before we do and starts interpreting everything on our behalf. That distinction matters, especially in conversations about Black Americans living abroad. There is a growing expat narrative that treats leaving the United States as proof that America was the singular source of every limitation. But moving to Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico or anywhere else does not automatically make your interpretation of your old life more accurate. Geography can change your surroundings without correcting your blind spots. And there is another uncomfortable layer to the Black expat conversation: many people criticizing American opportunity from overseas are still financially tethered to the very American systems they say they escaped. Remote salaries, pensions, Social Security, military benefits, U.S. businesses, American clients and dollar denominated income often make the overseas lifestyle possible. That does not invalidate anyone’s experience. It does make the story more complicated. The most mature form of self awareness is being able to recognize discrimination when it is present without needing discrimination to explain every place life did not go your way. Sometimes freedom is leaving a country. Sometimes freedom is leaving behind the belief that every uncomfortable experience requires an enemy.
