You Are Enough Somewhere along the way, you began keeping score. A private accounting of everything you’d failed to become. The money you should have made by now. The love you couldn’t keep. The body that betrayed your expectations. The person you imagined you would be at this age, standing somewhere in the distance, shaking their head at the person you actually are. And you believed all that. God help us, how easily we believe the worst things about ourselves. There’s a particular cruelty in the promise that one day, after enough effort, enough healing, enough correction of the human animal, you will finally arrive at a version of yourself worthy of the life you’ve been given. And so you work. You improve. You drag your poor, frightened heart from one interrogation to the next, hoping that someone, somewhere, will finally stamp the papers and declare you fit to live. But listen. There’s no interrogation. The life you keep preparing yourself to deserve is already passing through your hands. This morning, someone who loved being alive didn’t wake up. Their coffee cup is still in the cupboard. Their shoes are by the door. There are messages on their phone they will never answer. And here you are. With another fresh morning. Another improbable chance to put your feet on the floor and enter the great, unfinished business of being human. And you’re worried that you’re not enough? Enough for what? For the sun to warm your face? For a child to reach for your hand? For the unreasonable pleasure of being kissed by someone who has seen you at your worst and wants you anyway? My God. What a strange thing we’ve done to ourselves. We’ve taken the miracle of being alive and turned it into a job interview. We’ve made our own existence conditional upon the approval of an imaginary judge. And all the while, the heart continues its ancient labor beneath the ribs, asking for nothing, keeping faith with a life its owner has not yet learned to love. Maybe today you could stop arguing with your heart. Not forever. Just long enough to hear what’s been trying to reach you beneath all that noise. There’s work still to do. Of course there is. There are apologies to make. Old habits to break. Great distances yet to travel between the life you have lived and the life you ache to live. Go. Change everything that needs changing. But don’t confuse the work of growth with the right to be here. You don’t have to earn your own existence. And when evening comes, when the light’s gone from the windows and the house is quiet, I hope you’ll find a moment to sit with the uncomplicated miracle that you have lived another day. Not perfectly. Maybe not even particularly well. . But you were here. You touched the world, and the world touched you. And isn’t it absurd, to have been granted an entire life and spend so much of it wondering if you’re allowed to have one. You’re enough. Now go live.
