Actually, j.k. Rowling was very keen on having Alan rickman play Snape right before filming even properly started. But Alan rickman was obviously much older than Snape (who is the same age as lily and James) would have been, so they aged up all the characters from that generation (like Sirius, Peter and Remus), which is why they look that much older.
