@arisofficehours: Prestige is obviously something to think about but think harder about what lifestyle you’ll have in grad school before making a decision #HigherEd #GradSchool #PhD #LearnOnTikTokContest

Agree, I am finishing mine debt-free, and as a parent it’s hard enough to study while working too. lowering financial stress to something affordable is key

Thank you for sharing this! I’ve been battling with this exact issue. All of my options are fully funded programs but I have only been able to meet with one professor so far and I think he would be an amazing resource however he is at a less prestigious university. I’m still going to apply to all of my options but I come back this question if I were to gain admission to both the prestigious and less prestigious program.

I went abroad to Ireland (it was much more affordable) for grad school. People back in the states kept asking if I was going to Trinity. Nope! Trinity doubles as a major historical site with a high tourist crowding all year. I went to UCD with an excellent program and a more normal university campus and social life. It was definitely the right option for me.

I went where I got funding. Was at selective university but the program was less selective than the university. I got lucky and end up working with stars in the field who were themselves under-placed which made up for being in a comparatively less prestigious program. After I graduated I ended up taking jobs in departments that were substantially stronger than my PhD department. I ended up getting better jobs than peers who went to highly selective universities and departments.

Would your advice be the same for those pursuing an Ed.D.? I’ve been accepted to one at a regional comprehensive school that is financially accessible and have been wondering how much it matters that it is not a research institution. There’s a large research institution offering one as well that would cost only a bit more, coursework is pretty much the same (save coursework on pedagogy, which I want).
