You're correct. I do a handful of defamation cases every year (usually defense) and "I think" or "in my opinion" is not necessarily a good defamation buffer, especially if we're talking about defamation per se

I’ve noticed this too. People will say things like “she can say anything or admit to anything she wants in the civil case and it doesn’t matter” I think people have a massively flawed understanding of how burdensome the law is upon itself.

Trust me. I know, I work for a firm. (I am not an attorney) and you would be surprised what people THINK will work. It's hella funny when they turn what coulda been probation into a 2-3 yrs, just cuz they pissed the Judge off with their inability to be fr rn.

It matters until it doesn’t, or doesn’t until it does. The law truly is a series of technicalities. If it weren’t law would not be a specialized field. In every criminal trial, one lawyer is spinning deception as a logical absolute.

I also think people don't know what allegedly means. Allegedly is not a get out of jail free card bc you have to be able to point to the person who alleged the statement. If you are the source of the allegation you are responsible for them no matter how many allegedlys you sprinkle through out your opinion.
