The man that put Oregon on the World’s map and changed sportswear forever. The beginnings of one of the world’s great brands actually looked remarkably ordinary. From his own father asking when he was going to stop “jackasssing” around with shoes, to having to go through bank after bank and setback after setback, Phil never let the hardships define him rather how he reacted to them. And from that birthing innovation he would use the rest of his life. Starting with sourcing shoes from Japan with his former track coach Bill Bowerman with a company that would originally be called Blue Ribbon Sports and only turn to Nike once he was backstabbed by the manufacturer’s going around to other reps. So he created his own path with Nike at 33 years old. His talent wasn’t in simply design, but in seeing the potential in the people around him. With Jeff Johnson being the salesman of a lifetime and even being the one to reccomend the “Nike” name in the first place and using his mentor Bill Bowerman to every sense of the term in the best way. Knight’s greatest talent may never have been designing shoes for It was understanding belief. Today at 88, Phil still serves as Nike’s chairman a the company’s enormous Beaverton home, more than 400 acres, has been named the Philip H. Knight Campus.
