@atlneurosurgeon: Desk job pain. 👀 You work out. You’re active. You feel strong. Then you go from a job where you’re on your feet all day to sitting at a desk for hours… and suddenly your low back starts bothering you. As a spine surgeon, I see this constantly. And it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re out of shape. When you go from being on your feet all day to sitting for hours, your entire movement pattern changes. Your hip flexors spend more time in a shortened position. Your glutes are recruited less while you’re sitting. Your low back and SI region spend longer periods under the same static load. That combination can leave you feeling stiff, tight and uncomfortable, even if you’re young, fit and still working out regularly. And no, surgery is usually not where we start for uncomplicated sitting-related low back pain. Movement, staying active and physical therapy are often part of the first steps. 💪 Here are 4 simple ways to break up your workday: 1️⃣ Standing hip flexor stretch Step one foot back, gently tuck your pelvis and shift forward until you feel a stretch across the front of the hip. ⏱️ Hold 30 seconds/side. 2️⃣ Glute bridges Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat. Squeeze your glutes and lift your hips without excessively arching your back. 🔁 10–15 reps. 3️⃣ Standing cat-cow Place your hands on your thighs or desk. Slowly alternate between gently rounding and extending your spine through a comfortable range. 🔁 8–10 reps. 4️⃣ Standing marches Stand tall, gently brace your core and alternate lifting one knee at a time without leaning or twisting. Hold onto your desk if needed. 🔁 10 reps/side. 🪑 The bigger goal? Move more throughout your workday. You don’t need to obsess over finding one “perfect” sitting posture. Change positions. Stand up. Walk. Stretch. Give your body a break from staying in the same position for hours. Your workout matters, but so does what your body is doing during the other 8–10 hours of your day. If you’ve developed new low back or buttock pain, especially around the SI joint, after switching to a more sedentary job, the change in your daily movement is worth paying attention to. 📌 Save this for your next workday. 📲 Send it to someone who recently switched to a sitting job and keeps complaining about new low back or buttock pain, especially around the SI joint. Persistent or worsening pain, weakness, numbness, or bowel/bladder changes deserve medical evaluation rather than assuming sitting is the cause. 🧠 Dr. Steven Spitz @atlneurosurgeon #BackPain #Neurosurgeon #Fitness
