✨practice makes perfect✨ : : * Take your time choosing the vein. Don’t stick just because you see one!! Palpate it. A good vein should feel soft and bouncy. * Let gravity help. Have the arm hang down for a bit before you look. * Warm the arm. A warm towel/blaket or heat pack can make veins much easier to find. * Anchor the vein well. Pull the skin taut below your insertion site so the vein doesn’t roll. * Start with a lower angle. Bevel up, enter the skin smoothly, and watch closely for flash. * Once you get flash, flatten out. Advance slightly to ensure the catheter tip is in the vein before advancing the catheter off the needle. * Don’t advance the needle once threading the catheter. This can puncture through the vein or damage the catheter. * Know when to stop. If you meet resistance, have significant swelling/pain, or lose your landmarks, don’t keep digging. * Choose your catheter/site intentionally. Consider the prescribed therapy, anticipated duration, vein quality, and your facility policy.. not just what’s easiest to hit. * Secure it well and assess it. A successful stick isn’t finished until the line is appropriately secured and assessed for patency/infiltration per policy. : ✨And probably the biggest new-grad tip: don’t let missing an IV shake your confidence. IV starts are a hands-on skill. You can understand the technique perfectly and still need repetition to develop the feel for it. Every attempt teaches you something. ✨ : : #nurse #nurses #nursing #nursingstudent #nursingschool
