The adults try to explain death to her, but she understands the world in her own way, creating her own beliefs and answers. And then there’s Victoire Thivisol. She was only four when the film was made, yet her performance feels remarkably natural and emotionally raw. She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 1996 Venice Film Festival, becoming one of the youngest performers ever to receive the award. Doillon also spent months talking with children while preparing the film, using their thoughts and ways of speaking to shape the young characters. Ponette is quiet, simple, and devastating. It doesn’t try to explain childhood grief from an adult perspective. It lets you experience it through the eyes of a little girl who simply cannot understand why her mother won’t come back.
