Where the river broke into a hundred braided channels, the delta folk gathered for Reed-Weaving Day, when the water runs low and the tall grass is cut for the season's floating walkways. Terns, mudskippers, and marsh deer carried bundles to the sandbar. Then Ferrick the terrapin loaded nearly every one onto her back and set off for a quiet island of her own. “Ferrick,” called a jacana from the lilies. “A walkway is no use unless it reaches. Sharing is how a community shows care.” Ferrick stopped and counted the channels between herself and the island; more than one back could bridge. She turned around and laid the reeds down.
