Watch closely and patches of forest shift from green to bare ground and back again as timber is harvested and forests regrow across the ridgelines. Those trees are doing more than filling in the map. Forests pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in wood, roots, and soils. That makes them an important part of the climate equation — but they can’t compensate for unlimited fossil fuel pollution. That pollution still contributes to the heat, air-quality problems, extreme weather, and public-health risks scientists have documented for decades. The scientific evidence behind those risks has only grown stronger over time. So protecting forests matters. But so does stopping the pollution they’re being asked to clean up. You can weaken the safeguards. You can’t negotiate with the carbon cycle.
