@dailydoseofhistoryz: This WWII Battleship Fought Again in 1991 World War II history, Gulf War history, U.S. Navy, military history, and the legendary USS Missouri all came together again in 1991 when the famous battleship returned to combat during Operation Desert Storm. USS Missouri was an Iowa-class battleship built during World War II and became one of the most famous warships in American history. On September 2, 1945, representatives of Japan formally signed the surrender documents aboard Missouri in Tokyo Bay, marking the end of World War II. Decades later, after also serving during the Korean War, Missouri was modernized and returned to active service. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, the battleship was sent to the Persian Gulf as part of the U.S.-led military response. When Operation Desert Storm began in January 1991, Missouri launched Tomahawk cruise missiles at Iraqi targets. Then, on February 3, 1991, its enormous 16-inch guns opened fire in combat for the first time since the Korean War. Missouri carried nine 16-inch guns, each capable of firing massive shells weighing up to around 2,700 pounds (1,225 kg) over distances of roughly 23 miles (37 km). During the Gulf War, these guns were used against Iraqi artillery positions, command areas, defensive positions, and other military targets in occupied Kuwait. The battleship fired hundreds of 16-inch shells during the conflict, providing naval gunfire support as coalition forces prepared for the ground campaign. The sheer power of the guns made Missouri one of the most visually impressive weapons used during Desert Storm. What makes footage from 1991 especially significant is that it captures one of the final chapters of the traditional battleship era. USS Missouri had fought in World War II, Korea, and the Gulf War before finally being decommissioned in 1992. Today, Missouri is preserved as a museum ship at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, only a short distance from the wreck of USS Arizona — connecting the beginning and end of America’s involvement in World War II in one location.
